After using laptop and desktop for quite some time you might experience that your laptop or desktop is working very slowly. To save any file, to open any files, file transferring it will take 5-6 minutes more than it used to take usually. Sometime it might hang up the whole system until you reboot. The reasons can be many it might be that your computer might have been infected with malware, less RAM, old operating systems. Also you need to check if there is any program which starts when your laptop starts which is also known as start-up programs. Let’s check the reasons of your laptop/desktop running slow and how you would fix it.

Check the start-up programs
Sometimes when we install new program it automatically get add up in start-up program. It will never ask you the permission. Some program will ask for permission hence you can enable or disable them. When you start the computer it will start on automatically and run in background. This will impact the performance of your system which will automatically get slow.

Fixes: – Open up the task manager like old fashioned way which is Alt-Ctrl-Del there you will find list of program which are running. Select the program and click disable. So next time when you start your computer these program will be disabled from starting up.
Restart or reboot

Nowadays everyone is online and working in all kind of project so it is logical to keep your laptop/desktop switched ON whole day only keeping it in hibernate/sleep mode when we are not using. Many also have a practice to switch off the monitor. But if any program are hanging up or working very slow then you need to reboot the system as rebooting will fix many problems and that’s the first step which technical team advice.
Infected by Malware
Malware can be annoying and it will take substantial amount of your computer memory which will leave very less memory for you to use your personal work. If you are getting annoying pop up ads or if your programs are crashing then it might be the work of malicious malware. Sometime hackers also use this kind of malware to access your personal information.

Fixes: – you can install genuine antivirus and scan the system to remove the malware. Or you can install third party application to remove the malware. Always remember to update your antivirus software as they provide time to time update. Secure your network. Whenever you are surfing the internet doesn’t click on any link or any mail which tells you to click on any link. It might be malware which is trying to enter your system.
Temp files
Temp files are those which get stored in a folder over a period of time. If not deleted they can consume more and more space which would lead to slow down in computer/laptop. Temporary files are like history of internet, cookies and caches which takes up tons of space in hard disk. Deleting them would improve your computer performance. They have extension as .tmp or start with dollar sign.

Fixes:-You can use Disk clean utility or you can do it manually by deleting all file s which are stored in temp folder. You can go to start menu or press windows key and type %temp% in the search field. For using disk clean up for one particular partition you can select the drive and right click on it and go to properties. In general tab you can find “Disk clean up” when in you can select it and another pop up will open. You can click on OK.
RAM issue
RAM is an abbreviation of Random access memory. RAM memory is temporary which ‘volatile’ memory. Unlike stored memory RAM work only when the PC is turned on. Before increasing the RAM see to it that you understand your requirement. As if, you use only basic program like word excel or internet then 4 GB will do but if you are playing high end graphic games or doing multi tasking then you would definitely require 8-16 GB of RAM. The operating system relies on RAM to do its activity. If you don’t have enough RAM then it will definitely slow down your system. You can check the same by right clicking on my computer on “this PC” and select properties.

Fixes: You can buy Ram from local IT store or online and install the same if you know how to do it. If you do not then you can always take help from technical guy who will also guide you how much RAM is required as per your necessity. Also additionally you need to check how much RAM; slots available will be supported by your motherboard.
Windows update

Normally windows update is kept always on. As the Microsoft rolls out update every months it can be related to drivers, patch or security. If you don’t update your windows chances are you can make yours desktop vulnerable and this make hackers easy to hack your system. Most of the time patches are released to fix issue or bug and security. But sometimes it can be opposite as your system is running fine and update pop up and you update your system but your system starts hanging up or slows down. In these cases you can uninstall the recent patch which was installed and then restart your computer and check if you are facing these issues.
Even after checking all the above method if the system is still slow then you can format the drive and try to reinstall the program which you use. Or if you have old Desktop/Laptop which is more than 5-6 years old then it is natural to get slow as new software which are released need higher RAM, storage space. If this is the case then you can think of purchasing a new computer.
